  • Jorge Bolet: The RIAS Recordings, Vol. II

Volume 2 of the RIAS Jorge Bolet recordingsis dedicated to Franz Liszt, whose works helped launch the Cuban-born pianist's career; it was also his Liszt performances that shaped Bolet's later path. JorgeBolet shot to fame with the soundtrack of the Hollywood adaptation of the Liszt biography Song Without End. The RIAS recordings also show Bolet to be a Liszt authority. The piano concertos, conducted by LawrenceFoster and Edo de Waart, are concert recordings: the solo pieces were recorded in the studio. The concert paraphrase of the overture to Wagner's Tannhauser, whose challenges are feared by most pianists, was one of Bolet's ""war horses"": few other twentieth century pianists would have come close to the technical and interpretational perfection with which he performed the work. The recording ofthe three Petrarch sonnets from the second volume of Liszt's Annees de Pelerinage reveal Bolet to bea master of beautiful sound production and legato playing. Bolet demonstrates an unerringly clear and perfectly shaped pianism, as well as his understanding of virtuosity: it is never employed for its own sake, but always to illustrate the musical context. In contrast to the recordings in our first boxed set (audite 21.438), all recordings presented here are in stereo.

  • Berlin Alexanderplatz: Radio, Film, and the Death of Weimar Culture

This fascinating exploration of a work that was the epitome of German literary modernism illuminates in chilling detail the death of the Weimar Republic's left-leaning culture of innovation and experimentation. Peter Jelavich examines Alfred Döblin's Berlin Alexanderplatz (1929), a novel that questioned the autonomy and coherence of the human personality in the modern metropolis, and traces the radical discrepancies that came with its adaptation into a radio play (1930) and a film (1931). Jelavich explains these discrepancies by examining not only the varying demands of genre and technology but also the political and economic contexts of the media―in particular, the censorship practices in German radio and film. His analysis culminates in a richly textured discussion of the complex factors that led to the demise of Weimar culture, as Nazi intimidation and the economic strains of the Depression induced producers to depoliticize their works. Jelavich's book becomes a cautionary tale about how fear of outspoken right-wing politicians can curtail and eliminate the arts as a critical counterforce to politics―all in the name of entertainment.

  • Sergiu Celibidache: The Berlin Recordings, 1945-1957

Unlike in the elegiac, lyrical interpretations of his mature period, Celibidache also reveals his youthful, boisterous side in these recordings. This edition contains numerous first releases and paints a comprehensive picture of the conductor at that time. But his later development also already becomes perceptible. Celibidache during his early years in Berlin - a sonic compendium of music history during the post-war era.
