  • (DM 316) Treasure Map

Captain William Kidd was always believed to have secretly buried his stolen booty before he was arrested and transported back to England to stand trial. In a desperate bid to save his life after being sentenced to death, Kidd wrote to Robert Harley, speaker of the House of Commons, stating, ³In my late proceedings in the Indies, I have lodged goods and tresure [sic] to the value of £100,000.² However, Kidd was still hanged on May 23, 1701. Two treasure maps were carefully hidden in secret compartments in items of Kidd¹s furniture. The maps were discovered in 1929/30, and tested at the time by the British Museum. The museum confirmed the ink compound and parchment were of 17th century origin. The two maps depict the same distinctively shaped island, but with different markings and clues. Various theories propose that before Kidd left the Indian Ocean to declare his spoils in America, he deposited his personal hoard on his treasure island, intending to return at a later date to collect his secret cache. Theories of the treasure island¹s location include Oak Island, Nova Scotia; Clarke's Island, on the Connecticut River; an island in the Indian Ocean; an island off of Wilmington, North Carolina; and Hei Ling Chau Island near Hong Kong. Kidd's treasure has never been found. Sail...

  • (DM 315) The Adventure Captures Quedagh

In 1695, a colonial Royal governor of New York, the English king, and lords financed the Scottish privateer venture of William 'Captain' Kidd. His mission was to capture enemy French ships and pirate ships. As a privateer, English investors commissioned Kidd to seize all treasure, return to England, and split the plunder amongst the crew and investors. In September 1696, Kidd in his new ship, Adventure Galley, set sail for the privateer hunting ground called the 'Pirate Round.' The course led from the western Atlantic, around the southern tip of Africa, to Madagascar, then along the coast of Yemen and India. The 'Pirate Round' were largely routes of the East India Company ships of Britain and other nations. On January 30, 1698, 'Captain' Kidd captured the 340 ton neutral Indian merchant vessel Quadagh Merchant off the west coast of India. The ship was Indian owned, and commanded by an English captain. The voyage was financed by Armenians, and brokered by an agent of the East India Company. The Quadagh carried safe passage from the French, the enemy of England. Maritime scrimshaw, a unique American art form, has its roots in the age of wooden ships. In the 18th century, whaler sailing ships harvested whale and walrus blubber for lamp oil and candle wax. The sailors on whaling ship...

  • (DM 319) The Essex

In 1819, the 87-foot 238 ton whaler Essex sailed from Nantucket, Massachusetts on a two year voyage. The small ship was recently refitted including four 28 foot whaling boats. The crew included George Pollard, the captain; Owen Chase, first mate; Matthew Joy, second mate; and a 18 man crew. The Essex was one of 70 Nantucket ships in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. In the spring and summer of 1820, the Essex hunted whales in the south Pacific. Having no luck, the whaler restocked supplies and arrived at new offshore grounds 2500 nautical miles south of South America. On November 16, 1820, an Essex whaling boat, commanded by second mate Owen Chase, was destroyed by a whale surfacing beneath it. On November 20th Essex lookouts sighted spouts. The remaining three whale boats set out for the pods of whales. Two whale boats harpooned whales. On the Essex a large 85-foot whale rammed the dove under the ship. The whale swam five hundred yards ahead of the ship and turned toward the Essex. First mate Owen Chase writes the whale ³appeared with tenfold fury and vengeance in his aspect. The surf flew in all directions about him with the continual violent thrashing of his tail. His head about half out of the water, and in that way he came upon us, and again struck the [bow of the] ship.² T...

  • Scrimshaw: The Whaler's Legacy

Intricate, painstaking, sturdy yet incredibly delicate...scrimshaw has been a beautiful tradition on the sea and at the sea-side for centuries. Far from the comforts (and distractions) of land, whalers from America, England, Australia, and Portugal could spend the long hours of attention necessary to perfect the scrimshander's art. They forgot their loneliness and discomfort as the crafted pieces like those shown in over 400 vivid color photographs in this new, fascinating book. Martha Lawrence's research covers every facet of the art of scrimshaw, from its origins on whaling ships, to the daily life of the sailor/scrimshander, to the materials, themes, and tools used for creating these objects. She also discusses modern scrimshaw artists. Today's collector will find her chapters on collecting scrimshaw work especially helpful, particularly when used in conjunction with the thorough price guide.
