  • Stay Grounded: Soil Building for Sustainable Gardens (Easy-Growing Gardening Series Book 9)

One of the most important things a gardener can do is to build up the soil in her garden. But keep in mind that soil-building is not a one-time operation – it’s a process. As humus is devoured by microorganisms, worms, and plants, more organic material must constantly be added in order to keep the soil biomass, and thereby the plants, well-fed and happy. Also, humus makes the soil porous and fluffy, builds a strong soil structure, and releases nutrients in a form that’s easily absorbed by plant roots.Chemical fertilizers will not add humus to the soil. These are merely nutritional supplements; plants and their soil need real food – organic material. This book shows you all sorts of ways to get organic material into the soil to improve soil health and soil fertility, which in turn improves plant health -- for better gardens, higher yields, and more gorgeous flowers.SOIL BUILDINGSaving the world, one dirt clod at a timeEarthworms = earth moversGreen manuresCompostMy soil is evil!GET TO KNOW YOUR SOILTAKING SOIL SAMPLESTHE SOIL FOOD WEBEARTHWORMS: THE SUPER SOIL SAVERSHow to Protect EarthwormsA Field Guide to EarthwormsEpigeic EarthwormsEndogeic EarthwormsAnecic EarthwormsORGANIC MATTER AND HUMUSMother Nature Shows Us How To Make Great SoilDon’t Let Leaves Go To Waste!MULCH...

  • Green Gentrification (Routledge Equity, Justice and the Sustainable City series)

Green Gentrification looks at the social consequences of urban "greening" from an environmental justice and sustainable development perspective. Through a comparative examination of five cases of urban greening in Brooklyn, New York, it demonstrates that such initiatives, while positive for the environment, tend to increase inequality and thus undermine the social pillar of sustainable development. Although greening is ostensibly intended to improve environmental conditions in neighborhoods, it generates green gentrification that pushes out the working-class, and people of color, and attracts white, wealthier in-migrants. Simply put, urban greening "richens and whitens," remaking the city for the sustainability class. Without equity-oriented public policy intervention, urban greening is negatively redistributive in global cities. This book argues that environmental injustice outcomes are not inevitable. Early public policy interventions aimed at neighborhood stabilization can create more just sustainability outcomes. It highlights the negative social consequences of green growth coalition efforts to green the global city, and suggests policy choices to address them. The book applies the lessons learned from green gentrification in Brooklyn to urban greening initiatives globally....

  • Reconstructing Sustainability Science (The Earthscan Science in Society Series)

The growing urgency, complexity and "wickedness" of sustainability problems―from climate change and biodiversity loss to ecosystem degradation and persistent poverty and inequality―present fundamental challenges to scientific knowledge production and its use. While there is little doubt that science has a crucial role to play in our ability to pursue sustainability goals, critical questions remain as to how to most effectively organize research and connect it to actions that advance social and natural wellbeing. Drawing on interviews with leading sustainability scientists, this book examines how researchers in the emerging, interdisciplinary field of sustainability science are attempting to define sustainability, establish research agendas, and link the knowledge they produce to societal action. Pairing these insights with case studies of innovative sustainability research centres, the book reformulates the sustainability science research agenda and its relationship to decision-making and social action. It repositions the field as a "science of design" that aims to enrich public reasoning and deliberation while also working to generate social and technological innovations for a more sustainable future. This timely book gives students, researchers and practitioners a valuabl...
