In April 1939, shortly after the first Japanese Zero began test trials, modification drawings were already taking place on the zero in the Mitsubishi design room, to keep pace with the anticipated long air war in the Pacific. N the summer of 1937 Japan started action against China and threw into the front a great number of the newest planes which Japan had created with their original ideas and technique. Concerning fighters in particular, Japan had abandoned biplane type which was counted as the common sense of the then world and already employed the Type 96 Carrier Fighter (96 Kansen) that Japan had produced on the basis of many pieces of new technique and ideas such as all-metal, internally braced low wing monoplane design and the engine cowling designed to reduce air resistance. 96 Kansens always successfully engaed with I-15 and I-16 fighters and SB-2 bombers of Russian make as well as Gladiator fighters of British make. The 96 Kansen appeared as a fighter having a speed as high as 450 km/h and superior maneuverability at the time when conventional fighters of Japan and other nations of the world had a maximum speed of 350 km/h, winning admiration in Japan and abroad. This overthrew the deepfooted view that foreign planes were superior to those of Japan. After the appearance of the 96 Kansen, the modernization of Japan's aircraft industry was rapidly promoted and original planes came to be born.

  • Hasegawa HAJT17 1:48 Scale Mitsubishi A6M3 Zero Fighter T Model Kit

The A6M3 Type 22 was actually built after the clipped wing Type 32. Thanks to the additional power of the sake 21 engine over the previous Sakae 12, the sake 21 did not have the same fuel consumption as the earlier version. To add to that, the new engine was longer so the forward fuselage fuel tank had to be reduced in size. This meant that the Type 32 was decidedly down on range. Thanks to the clipped wing, it also did not have the ceiling or Rate of climb of the earlier A6M2 Type 21, though it was faster and did have a greater roll Rate. To counter that, the Type 22 reinstated the wing extension and also had increased fuel tankage added to the wings to make up for the thirstier engine and the loss of fuselage fuel stowage. Several Type 22S had long barrelled cannon fit into the wings at least one was field tested with wing mounted 30mm cannon. Though not built in the kind of numbers that the later Type 52 was, the Type 22 served well during the middle years of the War and was the Mount of many a jnaf ace.
